Herb's Description

Eleutherococcus senticosus. A decidious Shrub growing to 2m at a slow rate. It is hardy to zone 3. It is in flower in July. The flowers are hermaphrodite (has both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in nutritionally poor soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil. It can tolerate atmospheric pollution.

Warning & Precautions

Mild transient diarrhoea has been reported in a very small number of users.It can cause insomnia in some people if it is taken too close to bedtime.It is not recommended for individuals with uncontrolled high blood pressure.It can be used in pregnancy and lactation.However pregnant and lactating women should avoid the use. To avoid adjustment to the herb, it should be used for no longer than 60 consecutive days, followed by a period of 2-3 weeks of abstinence before using it again. May not suitable for kidney deficient type of bodies. according to School of Food and Nutrition of Bu Ren University in Taiwan, it improves the oxygen intake up to 8.2% on 20 athletes after taking 400mg per day of ci wu jia for 4 weeks.
